Mastering Difficult Conversations at Work

This workshop equips participants with the essential skills to approach difficult conversations confidently, fostering positive outcomes and preserving relationships in professional settings. Challenging conversations are an inevitable part of work (and life!) and it’s important that we don’t avoid them while also preparing ourselves appropriately for the best outcomes.

When done well, difficult conversations can foster breakthroughs and generate insights, improve people’s trust and give people a sense of their own resilience and wellbeing at work. It’s not rocket science, but there are some important principles to make these conversations work for everybody involved.

Overview

Suitable for all staff

This session supports staff to face conflict head-on. The research is clear; challenging conversations are best had sooner rather than later. Some experts suggest aiming to have at least one difficult conversation each week. We’ll explore the consequences of avoiding these conversations and engage with a mindset shift of timely preparation and confidence.

Participants will learn strategies to hold these conversations with the best possible outcomes. We’ll explore how to prepare without being scripted, keeping a focus on the key objectives, slowing down and breathing throughout the conversation, and the importance of acknowledging your partner’s perspective.

We’ll look at ways to manage our emotions during this kind of conversation while making room for any difficulties that might arise for the person we’re talking with. In this instance it’s important to learn to speak in specifics and to use ‘I’ statements to clarify the issue at hand.

Once we feel a greater sense of calm and understanding in these conversations we are better able to seek solutions and to problem solve together. Usually that’s the initial impulse for coming together in this kind of a situation; to try to find a way forwards and a solution to a challenge. We’ll then also explore brainstorming techniques and ways of creatively problem solving together.
