Cultivating Kindness to Yourself and Others

The study of human evolution demonstrated that humans are not wired to be competitive and selfish. They are biologically wired to be kind and supportive and it is this support, the organisation of species in groups where they nurture and support one another that allowed their survival.

Overview

Current research supports this idea that kindness is indeed an intrinsic biologically based skill but also that it is one that we can cultivate and grow. In recent years, science demonstrated the impact of kindness (giving and receiving) on certain areas of our brain and how these release chemicals that benefit our physical and mental health. There is a proven virtuous cycle between kindness and happiness (happy people and kinder and kind people are happier) but also a myriad of other benefits.

The focus of this session is to share tangible and practical techniques to practice kindness and rip all its benefits in our lives at work and at play. It explores outwards oriented kindness - compassion + honesty; and inwards oriented kindness - self-compassion, with tips and exercises to put this into practice.

The session starts by exploring our “self” (kindness starts at home, self-compassion) and move towards others in a social and professional context.

The session includes some theory to back up the rationale for cultivating kindness, including debunking myths around kindness by discussing what it is not and how it is never a depleting behaviour, and sharing pieces of research demonstrating how kindness activates parts of our brain responsible for happiness, wellbeing and optimum health.

Outcomes

  • Shares strategies to achieve the ‘how’ to be kinder

  • Reinforces the need for self-kindness alongside that for others

  • Explains the rationale and neuroscience for cultivating kindness
