The Power of Community

Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 celebrates the power and importance of community.

Overview

In this workshop we explore what community is, and what makes for a life-giving community?

We start with a brief exploration of resilience so that we all feel more open to the idea of drawing on the support available to us via our communities. The impulse to be hyper-independent can be an invisible roadblock that we need to bring to the light first.

We will look at what community is and get clear on the characteristics of a positive community.

We take a look at why it matters, covering the many benefits of feeling part of a community which includes protection from loneliness, safety and support in hard times.

We explore the range of communities that are available and ways you can connect, including a discussion of how to reach out for support, addressing any barriers people feel to reaching out, suggestions on how to provide support to others while protecting your wellbeing in the process, and simple tips to boost the quality of your interactions to create more positive relationships.

We also look at the power of community in the workplace and ask you to reflect on what that may look like for you in your teams and organisation.

Finally we take a look at how to start a community on your own, what are the necessary ingredients?

This session is delivered by Work Well Being Associate Suzy Reading who as well as being a Psychologist, Coach and Published Author, has successfully built a thriving nearly 60k Instagram community. Suzy shares how she has achieved this through the power of human connection.
