Unconventional Antidotes to Anxiety

We’ve all been there, body feeling jittery, mind racing, and we tell ourselves, just relax… but releasing tension in stillness can feel impossible once we’re in the midst of the stress response.

We’re on the right track though – we do want to learn how to access a state of physical relaxation, but the best way there isn’t trying to let go in stillness – it is via gentle exertion or movement as a gateway to calm. We do want to cultivate constructive thoughts and self-talk but we can use the body to dial down the stress response, not just the mind, and even better news: mental health is not the absence of difficult thoughts and feelings, it is our ability to cope with these experiences.

Overview

Suitable for all staff

This workshop takes an honest look at the well-intentioned mistakes we commonly make in managing anxiety – namely, trying to relax in stillness, trying to deepen the breath by focusing on the breath alone, and being tough on ourselves for having these experiences.

Most importantly, we experience what we should do instead via a toolkit of practices that soothe the nervous system – breathing practices that incorporate movement, rituals that release physical tension and nervous system hacks that bring us back to a state of calm, where we then have access to the skill of self-compassion.

Participants will leave feeling empowered with a new way to approach anxiety and a toolkit of practical ways to achieve this.
