Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, representing 15% of all new cancer cases, and 30% of new cancer cases in females (Cancer Research UK, 2024).

It is therefore crucial that we are aware of the risk factors and signs and symptoms in order to reduce risk and support early diagnosis.

Overview

Suitable for all staff

This workshop, delivered by a leading medical doctor and practicing GP, aims to empower both female and male colleagues with the crucial knowledge about breast cancer.

We look at the statistics, how common it is and who is more likely to get it. We also look at the risk factors that increase and reduce the chance of getting breast cancer, including explaining the facts about hormonal contraception and HRT. We also explain the role of family history and how that influences your risk.

Crucially we also share lifestyle tips in order to minimise these risks.

We then explain the merits of screening and early detection and the importance of self examination and how to do this, identifying the key signs and changes to be aware of. We talk about mammograms, risks and benefits- when do we start getting them? Why only three years? Who needs them more often?

Participants will leave empowered with the facts and knowledge for how to minimise their risks.
